VW Campervan Head Gasket Repair

Expert Service in Dunmow, Essex
When your VW campervan head gasket fails, you need it fixed fast and done right. We’ve worked on VW engines for over 25 years at our Dunmow workshop. We know what works and what doesn’t.
What Head Gasket Problems Look Like
Your head gasket sits between the engine block and cylinder head. It keeps oil, coolant, and combustion gases separate. When it breaks down, these fluids mix and cause damage.
You’ll notice:
- White smoke is coming from your exhaust
- Engine overheating regularly
- Coolant levels are dropping fast
- Milky oil on the dipstick
- Loss of power when driving
- Bubbles in the coolant tank
Don’t wait if you see these signs. A small problem becomes expensive when the cylinder head warps or the engine block gets damaged.

Our Complete Repair Process
We start with compression testing to find exactly what’s wrong. This shows us which cylinders are leaking and how bad the damage is.
Then we remove the cylinder head carefully. The timing belt comes off first, and we check it for wear. If it needs replacing, now is the time because the work is already done.
Next comes cleaning. Both the engine block surface and cylinder head must be completely flat and clean. Any warping gets machined out. This step matters because a bad surface means the new gasket fails quickly.
We fit genuine OEM VW parts. The gasket, head bolts, and seals all get replaced. Cheap parts don’t last, so we don’t use them. Our mechanic always uses the correct tools
Before fixing, we adjust valve clearances and check the cooling system for other problems. Fresh oil and coolant go in, then we pressure test everything to confirm the repair holds.

Benefits You Get From Proper Repairs
- Your engine stops overheating. With good compression and coolant flow, the temperature stays normal even on long drives
- Power comes back. When the engine seals properly, your van drives better and uses fuel more efficiently..
- Leaks stop. Oil and coolant stay where they should, so you don’t waste money topping them up all the time..
- Your engine lasts longer. Fixing head gasket problems early stops serious damage like cracked heads or worn cylinders, which are very costly to repair.
- Better fuel economy. When the engine is sealed right, less fuel is wasted, and you’ll notice the savings when you fill up.
- What makes us different: We are Volkswagen-trained mechanics who work only on campervans and transporters. Because of this, we know these engines completely. We’ve seen every kind of problem and know how to fix them properly for good.

Our Promise to You
We tell you the real cost before starting work. No surprise and affordable rates. If we find other problems during disassembly, we will call you first.
We use proper diagnostic equipment, not guesswork. Leak-down testing, compression checks, and coolant pressure tests show exactly what needs fixing. Quality matters. Genuine parts cost more but last longer than cheap copies.

Stop Small Problems Getting Bigger
Regular oil changes keep your engine clean. Coolant changes stop corrosion that damages gaskets. We check your cooling system during services to catch problems early. If something feels different when driving, get it checked. Strange noises, temperature changes, or rough running all mean something needs attention.
